York county was founded on April 19, 1749 making it one of the oldest counties in the United States. It played a major role in the formation of the state of Pennsylvania and for 6 months was the first capitol of the United States. It is not known where the name originated, but it is believed to been named after either the Duke of York or Yorkshire, England. York county is home to more than 20 free factory tours. If you like snack foods, Martin’s Potato Chips, Snyder’s of Hanover, and Utz are tours that you won’t want to miss. There are many more including Bluett Bros. violins and Harley Davidson motorcycles.
York county began as a rural farming community, but has reinvented itself by adding the trucking industry, manufacturing which as Borg Warner and the York Corporation, and technology. It is known for it’s work ethic and boasts higher learning such as York College, York Technical Institute, and Penn State York.
The heart of York county is the city of York which has enjoyed an amazing renaissance in recent years. The Strand and Capitol theatres. Built in 1906, have been the center of this renaissance. Over the decades, it has been home to shows, movies, and concerts. It has attracted downtown visitors for shows and concerts paving the way for a thriving restaurant industry. The Strand-Capitol theatres represents a majority of the Appel center for performing arts. If you like baseball, you will want to pay a visit to Brooks Robinson stadium and attend a York Revolution baseball game. A visit to downtown York would not be complete without a visit to the Central Market house at 34 W. Philadelphia St. It is a world class farmers market that has been attracting people to downtown York since 1888.
